Over the last few years we've sent TGO columnist Ed Byrne climbing, sailing, kayaking... even blokarting. For August's issue we asked him to try his hand at 'adventure swimming'. It's essentially a wild swim with a bit of grit, the idea being that the seeking out of the swim should be testing enough in itself; choosing a long route or a tough climb for instance.
Pete Kelly of Head to the Hills took Ed up Helvellyn on a sunny day in Lakeland. An initial climb warmed-up their muscles before they changed into their kit and took the plunge in the cold water of Red Tarn ("the problem for me isn't the cold, it's the fact I'm a bad swimmer.") They then continued on their way up to the summit of the mountain and then, after descending to Glenridding, capped-off the day with a dip in the more reasonable temperatures of Ullswater.
