Strong winds for many mountain areas and likely to see some snowfall – especially in parts of Scotland

We've broken the country down geographically starting in the north and gathering our information from credited various sources including the Mountain Weather Information Service (in Scotland in association with the Mountaineering Council of Scotland) and the Met Office, and in season the Scottish Avalanche Information Service. It's almost Radio 4's Today programme in its brevity, so always go to the original source for more detailed information.

No significant warnings or alerts

NORTH-WEST HIGHLANDS

According to MWIS –

Saturday: Likely to be windy with gusts up to 60mph. Should be a clear day though with low risk of rain. Potentially some fog on the western tops.

Sunday: Frequent snow expected and winds of up to 50mph.

WEST HIGHLANDS

According to MWIS –

Saturday: Risk of gusts of up to 60mph on the tops, snow likely to develop in the south and cloud should lower throughout the day.

Sunday: Strong winds expected and frequent snow with rain on lower slopes. Expect low visibility.

CAIRNGORMS

According to MWIS –

Saturday: Should be strong winds and snow will be likely to develop, particularly in the south. Visibility should decrease throughout the day.

Sunday: Expect persistent snow at times and heavy cloud on the tops. Strong winds also.

SOUTHEASTERN HIGHLANDS

According to MWIS –

Saturday: Some gusts of up to 50mph on the tops, snow likely to develop and cloud should lower throughout the day.

Sunday: Still windy, snow could be persistent at times and there's a risk of fog on the tops.

SOUTHERN UPLANDS

According to MWIS –

Saturday: Snow likely to turn to rain on higher slopes and sunshine unlikely.

Sunday: Could be occasional snow and hail, considerable buffeting on the tops. 40% chance of a cloud-free summit.

LAKE DISTRICT

According to MWIS –

Saturday: Wind around 25mph in the morning but could increase to around 50mph by the end of the day. Likely to see some snowfall but this should turn to rain. Expect low visibility.

Sunday: Expect occasional hail or snow and extensive cloud on higher areas. Wind could reach up to 50mph.

NORTH WALES

According to MWIS – 

Saturday: Rain likely to set in for most of the day, and cloud should be extensive. Southern areas of Snowdonia could see winds of up to 60mph.

Sunday: Looking very similar to Saturday though could see some snow and hail as well as rain.

PEAK DISTRICT

According to MWIS –

Saturday: Strong winds likely and cloud should lower to reduce visibility. Expect rain for most of the day.

Sunday: Should see intermittent rain and snow and cloud will be likely to cover the high ground. Still, 50% chance of a cloud free summit.
